Human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) attacks the immune system, the body’s
defence against infection. This virus is often transmitted during
sex or intravenous (IV) drug use, but mothers can also pass HIV
infection to their babies during birth or breast-feeding. Some of
the other STDs make it easier to become infected with HIV. About
900,000 people in the United States and 40 million worldwide are
living with HIV infection.
Symptoms vary from
person to person. Some people may not notice anything wrong, while
others experience fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph glands soon
after infection. These symptoms fade within a few weeks, and are
often mistaken for the flu. After these initial symptoms, people
with HIV will have no, or very few, symptoms, but they can still
transmit HIV to others. As HIV continues to destroy the immune
system, people may experience fever and sweating, tiredness, rapid
weight loss, swollen lymph glands, and frequent herpes outbreaks.
When the immune system becomes very weak and certain illnesses
develop, a person is considered to have the acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). HIV infection cannot be cured yet,
but treatment helps people live longer, healthier lives and makes it
harder for HIV to be passed on to others.
